Florida Events Calendar for February 2008

This year the Super Bowl moves to Arizona but sports fans still have the opportunity to watch the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series - Daytona 500 on February 17 at the Daytona International Speedway.

February also heralds the start of Spring Training for the baseball teams taking part in the Grapefruit League.

Non sports fans don't need to miss out with the Mardi Gras celebrations around February 5, Valentines Day on February 14 and then Presidents Day on Monday, February 18.

February is also a great month in Florida for county fairs with entertainment for the whole family including livestock shows, beauty pageants, bull riding, clay shoots, carnival rides and country music concerts. February also sees the first of Florida's strawberry festivals.

Theme Park Events

various dates Disney's Pirate & Princess Party returns for 2008 at the Magic Kingdom on selected nights on January 21, 26 and 29, February 2, 5, 9, 14, 22 and 26. The party starts each night at 7:00 pm and finishes at midnight.

You can hunt for chocolate doubloons, see Disney's Enchanted Adventures Parade, watch the Magic, Music and Mayhem fireworks spectacular and the Dream Along With Mickey castle stage show. Selected attractions will remain open and you can come in costume if you wish.

Tickets cost US$43.95 for adults and US$37.95 for children if bought in advance or US$45.95 for adults and US$39.95 for children if bought on the day (all prices plus tax).

various dates Busch Gardens Africa celebrate Irish music and dance with Irish Thunder from January 10 until March 30.

The Big Band Concert Series in the Stanleyville Theater comes to a close with The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra (January 31 to February 3) and The Artie Shaw Orchestra featuring Dick Johnson (February 7 to 10) (www.buschgardens.com).

February 22nd to March 30th Cypress Gardens celebrate their annual lawn and garden show, The Festival of Flowers with Botanical Garden tours, gardening demonstrations and special entertainment (www.cypressgardens.com).

Parades and Carnivals

selected dates This year Mardi Gras is on February 5 and there are special Mardi Gras celebrations throughout the State including Mardi Gras at Universal Orlando® every Saturday night from February 2 to April 19. See the Mardi Gras celebrations page for more details.

Sporting Events

mid February onwards The Atlanta Braves are due to start their Spring training at the Cracker Jack® Stadium at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex from mid February through to the end of March as the nations baseball teams head south for Spring training in Florida or Arizona. Their first game in on February 27 when they play an exhibition game against the University of Georgia. See the Spring Training page for more details of the all the teams training in Florida in 2008.
9th The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series - Budweiser Shootout & ARCA 200> takes place at the Daytona International Speedway (www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com).
15th to 17th The 120th Silver Spurs Rodeo of Champions and Xtreme Bulls Series takes place in the purpose built climate-controlled 8,300 seat Silver Spurs Arena located at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee.

This is the largest rodeo in the Southeast with more than 60 of the top professional rodeo riders competing for more than $100,000 in prize money. You can watch bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronco riding, steer wrestling and barrel racing as well as the world famous Silver Spurs Quadrille horseback team (www.silverspursrodeo.com).

17th This year sees the 50th anniversary running of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway (www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com).
23rd to 24th The Orange Blossom Festival and Rodeo is at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds in Davie (www.davieprorodeo.com).

February 28th to March 2nd Olympians, professional and amateur competitors will be taking part at the largest windsurfing event in the US at Merritt Island, at the 23rd Calema Midwinters Windsurfing Festival (www.calema.com).
February 29th to March 2nd The ESPN The Weekend at Disney's Hollywood Studios™ lets you get close up to star athletes in a Hollywood-style motorcade, plus ESPN entertainment, ESPN telecasts and interactive experiences for both sports fans and families.

Amongst the athletes scheduled to take part are Brandon Jacobs and Amani Toomer (New York Giants), Adam Vinatieri (Indianapolis Colts), Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles), baseball legend Cal Ripken, Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic ), tennis legend Martina Navratilova and the famous Harlem Globetrotters.

ESPN personalities include Jay Crawford, Peter Gammons, Mike Greenberg, Orestes Destrade, Mike Tirico, Colin Cowherd, Mike Golic, Linda Cohn, John Kruk, Karl Ravech, Jemele Hill and Trey Wingo (disneyworld.disney.go.com).

Concerts

various dates It is a busy month at Historic Bok Tower Sanctuary. On February 1 there is a special Dedication Day Concert to commemorate Edward W. Bok's gift to the American people on February 1, 1929.

At the Pinewood Estate there are two concerts. here is a George Soulos and Carol Thompson Concert with Piano and Flute on February 3, and a Judith Alstadter Piano Concert on February 17.

There are carillon concerts every day at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm but on February 14 there is a Valentine's Day Carillon Concert with traditional romantic favourites and then on February 19 it is Presidents Day with a patriotic musical selection.

At the Visitor Center on February 9, there a living history performance by actress Betty Jean Steinshouer when she portrays Marjory Stoneman Douglas, author of "A River of Grass" which helped start the movement to save the Everglades, in Voice of the Everglades: Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

This is followed on February 22 by Father of Conservation: John Muir which tells the story of John Muir who helped start the U.S. National Park System back in the late 1800s.

Finally on February 23, there is an Acoustic Eidolon in Concert at Visitor Center which combines Celtic, folk, bluegrass and Latin music with guitarist Joe Scott and cellist Hanna Alkire (http://www.boksanctuary.org).

various dates SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Africa are holding their annual Bud & BBQ over four weekends starting February 16 and ending March 9 with the country’s hottest stars and classic rock bands.

On Saturdays at SeaWorld you can see Trisha Yearwood (February 16), Creedence Clearwater Revisited (February 23), Craig Morgan & Pat Green (March 1) and Joe Nichols & Jason Michael Carroll (March 8).

Meanwhile on Sundays at Busch Gardens you can watch Sara Evans (February 17), Styx (February 24), Clay Walker (March 2) and Gary Allan (March 9).

All washed down with ice-cold Anheuser-Busch beers and southern style smokin' barbecue ribs and chicken (www.budandbbq.com).

various dates Cypress Gardens continue their new series of weekend concerts including Pat Boone (February 3), Ray Price with special guest Connie Smith (February 9), Loretta Lynn (February 16), The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards (February 17), George Jones (February 23) and Bill Haley's Comets & The Knockouts (February 24).

All are included in the standard park admission, though reserved seats can also be purchased. The concerts planned for Kenny Rogers (February 2) and Pam Tillis (February 10) have had to be rescheduled due to unforeseen illnesses (www.cypressgardens.com).

various dates Silver Springs are also running a series of music concerts including Brenda Lee (February 2), Wayne Newton (February 9), America (February 16) and Tony Orlando (February 23) (www.silversprings.com).
21st to 24th The Mount Dora Music Festival features live entertainment from jazz, classical and big band musicians (www.mountdoramusicfest.com).
22nd to 24th The 31st Annual Kissimmee Kiwanis Bluegrass Festival takes place at the Osceola Heritage Park, Kissimmee. Featured acts include the Chapmans, the Lewis Family, Goldwing, Larry Gillis, Roger Bass & Hillbillies, Carolina Sunshine, Doerfel Family, Village Singers, Pine Mountain RR and Stage Coach Bluegrass (www.originalbluegrass.com).

Art and Film Festivals

2nd to 3rd The 33rd Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival features nearly 300 artists from around the world displaying their exhibits in the downtown area (www.mountdora.com).
selected dates The 15th Annual Renaissance Festival and Crafts Village at Quiet Waters Park, Fort Lauderdale each weekend between Saturday February 9 and Sunday March 9 allows you to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and cheer on jousting knights, play games and learn the proper etiquette of the day (www.ren-fest.com).
9th to 10th The 14th Annual Pigeon Key Art Festival is held in Marathon Community Park and features food, music and a children's corner as well as art and craft exhibitions (www.fla-keys.com).
23rd to 24th The 43rd Annual Old Island Days Art Festival is an art show held in the historic old town at Key West (www.fla-keys.com).
23rd to 24th The 46th Annual Art Fiesta takes place in the Old Fort Park, New Smyrna Beach, where you can see exhibits from 250 artists from around the state (www.nsbfla.com).
February 28th to March 9th Miami is hosting their 25th Annual Miami International Film Festival with over 100 films from around the world (www.miamifilmfestival.com).

Car, Motorcycle and Boat Shows

February 29th to March 9th The 67th Annual Bike Week takes place in and around Daytona with a number of events taking place including the SuperCross by Honda and Daytona 200 by Honda motorcycle races at Daytona International Speedway (www.officialbikeweek.com).

Airshows and Rocket Launches

7th The Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-122) is due to lift off on the 24th mission to the International Space Station to deliver the European Space Agency's Columbus science laboratory module but the launch date is only provisional at this time.    Read more on all launches....
to February 25th The Collings Foundation finish the Florida portion of their Wings of Freedomtour with their Boeing B-17 Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator and North American B-25 Mitchell World War II bombers.

If you fancy seeing or even flying in one of them, head over to Page Field Airport Fort Myers (January 30 to February 1), Venice Municipal Airport (February 1 to 4), Vandenberg Airport Tampa (February 4 to 6), Kissimmee Gateway Airport (February 6 to 8), Ocala Regional / Jim Taylor Field (February 8 to 10) and finally Keystone Airpark, Keystone Heights (February 22 to 25).

County Fairs & Festivals

January 18th to February 3rd The annual South Florida Fair runs for 17 days at the South Florida Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach. There are over 80 rides, games and attractions at the Wade Shows midway carnival plus the amazing Kachunga Alligator Show and a spectacular world class ice show (www.southfloridafair.com).
1st to 10th The Charlotte County Fair takes place in Port Charlotte.
7th to 17th The Collier County Fair, 10 miles east of I-75 (exit 111) includes a number of livestock shows, a midway provides by Reithoffer Shows plus the Windham Mountain Ranch Show (www.colliercountyfair.com).
7th to 18th This year, the 104th Annual Florida State Fair, Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa will be bringing a piece of Vegas to the Sunshine State in the guise of the Elvis Extravaganza Impersonator National Finals and GLITZ! – A Las Vegas musical revue plus FCW Wrestling featuring WWE Stars of Tomorrow, Florida State Roller Derby Championship, Kachunga Alligator Show and a whole host of other attractions including a midway.

There is also the Country Gold Tour 2008 Concert featuring Leroy Van Dyke, Jim Ed Brown, Helen Cornelius, Bobby Bare, Steve and Rudy Gatlin (The Gatlin Brothers), Narvel Felts, Ronnie Prophet, Moe Bandy and T.G. Sheppard on February 14 (www.floridastatefair.com).

8th to 16th The Martin County Fair and Youth Livestock Show in Stuart attracts over 70,000 visitors and this year features the Anastasini Circus, Miss Martin County Fair Pageant, Kachunga Alligator Show, a High Dive Act and and a showcase of agricultural heritage (www.martincountyfair.com).
8th to 16th The 71st Annual Highlands County Fair, Sebring includes Junior Livestock, a Beauty Pageant, Baking Contest and midway (www.hcfair.net).
8th to 17th The Osceola County Fair & Livestock Show (Kissimmee Valley Livestock Show and Fair), Kissimmee has been going since the early 1940's and features a range of livestock exhibitions plus a midway and live entertainment (www.osceolacountyfair.com)/
18th to 24th The 61st Annual Pasco County Fair "Rock Around The Stock", Dade City features pageants, a rodeo, demolition derby, Fritzy "One Man Circus", T Texas Terry, Blaszak Tigers Show, Fearless Flores Thrill Show, motorcyle and quad races and a midway provided by Wade Shows.

There is live entertainment from Southern Star Bluegrass Band, Three Bridges, The Lewis Family, The Greenes and Ron Diamond plus the 39th Annual Heart of Florida Folk Festival (www.pascocountyfair.com).

19th to 24th The Hardee County Fair is held in Wauchula.
22nd to 23rd The 25th Annual St. Coleman's Italian Festival, Pompano Beach allows you to enjoy great Italian food plus a midway, arts and crafts and live entertainment including Chris MacDonald, Jimmy Stowe, Amber Leigh, Mark Zaden, Superstuff, Fabulons and Bobby Stringer (www.italianfest.org).
22nd to March 1st The Southeastern Youth Fair, Ocala features students from Marion County and includes lamb shearing and tractor driving. It is preceded by the Florida High School Rodeo on February 22 to 23 (www.seyfair.com).
22nd to March 2nd The 43rd Annual Saint Lucie County Fair, Ft. Pierce features a demolition derby, Shenanigan's Wild West Show, Show Me Safari Petting Zoo, The Live Shark Encounter, a midway, live musical entertainment plus concerts by Billy Ray Cyrus and Drake Bell (www.stluciecountyfair.org).
23rd to 24th The Grant Seafood Festival takes place in Grant, just south of Melbourne. Over 50,000 visitors are expected to enjoy live entertainment, sample local seafood and see over 100 artists and crafters from across the country exhibiting their handmade crafts www.grantseafoodfestival.com.
24th to March 2nd The Chalo Nitka Festival, Glades County Youth and Livestock Show and Frontier Days Rodeo is in Moore Haven.
28th to March 9th At the 72nd Annual Florida Strawberry Festival you can enjoy fresh strawberries plus agricultural shows, rides courtesy of Mighty Bluegrass Show's Midway, Robinson's Racing Pigs, parades and contests at the appropriately named Plant City.

Entertainment is provided by Southern Star Bluegrass, Vocal Trash, Dennis Lee and Runa Pacha plus every day, there are concerts from well known country artists including Bobby Vinton, Josh Turner, Charlie Pride, Miranda Lambert, Jeff & Sheri Easter/The Isaacs, Mercy Me, Chris Cagle, Alan Jackson, Mickey Gilley, Travis Tritt, Glen Cambell, Blake Shelton, Crystal Gayle, Tom Jones, Smothers Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Gene Watson, Trace Adkins, Billy Ray Cyrus, Neal Mccoy, Sugarland and Jason Aldean (www.flstrawberryfestival.com).

29th to March 9th The 84th Annual Southwest Florida and Lee County Fair, Ft. Myers includes livestock exhibits, a petting zoo and a midway (www.leeciviccenter.com).

Other Events

2nd Fox Lake Park in Titusville are hosting Snow Fest 2008 which features tons of snow, rock climbing, face painting and a craft fair (www.space-coast.com).
7th to 10th There is a Civil War Heritage Festival which highlights events in Key West during the Civil War with re-enactments and tours of Key West's historic Civil War–era Fort Zachary Taylor (www.fla-keys.com).
