Bringing you the latest news from the Sunshine State
Welcome to the September Newsletter

Hi subscriber, welcome to the September newsletter of the Florida Review & Travel Guide. We plan to bring you a newsletter on the first day of each month with details of upcoming events and news from across Florida.

Yet again it has been an eventful month in Florida. Following a successful space walk to resolve problems with displaced spacers between the heat tiles, the space shuttle Discovery was forced to divert to Edwards Air Force Base in California because of adverse weather at the Cape Kennedy Space Center two days running. Because of the problems with shedding foam from the external tank, the shuttle fleet is again grounded indefinitely.

Hot on the heels of Hurricane Dennis, came Emily and Irene which did not affect Florida. Then the worse so far, Hurricane Katrina hit the south eastern coast near Miami causing a number of deaths before causing even more death and destruction when it swept through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. It is likely to be the most expensive hurricane ever to hit the United States.

Hot air balloon rides in Florida

Florida with its year round sunshine makes an ideal place for a hot air balloon ride and you will find companies throughout Florida (see our Hot Air Balloon Directory page for their details).

If you do not mind getting up early in the morning then a hot air balloon flight can make a great change from the usual round of theme parks and beaches.

There is something very magical about taking a hot air balloon ride in Florida, watching the sunrise as you float serenely over orange groves, lakes, fields or the theme parks away from all the hustle and bustle of life below.

Nearly all balloon flights take place at sunrise when the winds are most favourable, though a couple of companies are able to fly in the early evening; it really depends where you are in the State. Therefore if you want to go on a hot air balloon flight you will need to rendezvous with the balloon company around 6 o'clock in the morning depending upon the time of year. Note that some companies offer a hotel pickup service at an extra charge.

Once you arrive, you will attend a pre-flight briefing where you are given safety instructions. You are then taken to the launch site. Particularly if you are doing a hot air balloon ride in Orlando, the company will try to find a suitable launch site that will take you over the Walt Disney World Resort but at the end of the day the wind direction will dictate your eventual flight path.

When you get to the launch site you can usually help prepare the balloon for take-off which involves inflating the envelope with a fan to start with and then the propane burners are lit to fill it with hot air.

You climb into the basket, the flight begins and you will then take off and let the wind take you where it wishes. Depending on wind strength and direction you can find yourself flying at anything from tree-top height to several thousand feet.

Most flights last around one hour and then comes the fun as the pilot has to find a suitable site to effect a 'landing'. All the time you are airborne the chase vehicle will be tracking you from the ground ready to meet you at your landing site.

After the balloon is deflated and packed away, most companies will then offer you a champagne toast to celebrate your successful flight and a certificate of flight as a memento. Most companies also include a complimentary picnic or breakfast, either at the landing site or back at their offices.

It is best to book your flight early in your holiday so if the flight is cancelled due to inclement weather you stand more chance of rescheduling.

Prices are typically around $175-$200 per adult (children are usually around half price) including breakfast and reservations are essential.

Favourite things to do in Florida

We got to thinking about our favourite memories from Florida the other day and started putting together a list of favourite thing to do in Central Florida; when we go to 25 we stopped!! We then thought it would be fun to publish other peoples list as well so here are just a few of ours to start the ball rolling (in no particular order):
  • Sitting on a lanai by your own private villa, on a beautiful warm still morning, eating breakfast with a glass of cold orange juice in your hand, gazing out over the pool to a lovely lake beyond
  • Taking an airboat ride on the lakes and swamps around Lake Tohopekaliga, rushing between tall grasses, jumping over banks and then the driver doing a high speed 360 degree handbrake turn when you least expect it
  • Visiting Walt Disney World. In particular, Disney-MGM Studios, when the sun is shining, songs from the movies are playing on the tannoy system throughout the park and singing along to them
  • Going to a Red Lobster restaurant for dinner and gorging yourself on the cheesy biscuits
  • Watching a shuttle launch at Cape Canaveral from the NASA causeway, and then hearing it arrive back a few days later with a double sonic boom
  • Watching the fireworks display at Disney EPCOT at the end of a super day
  • Walking through the herb garden at Cyprus Gardens on a baking hot day and smelling the gorgeous scent of rosemary oozing from the hedges
  • Doing the Star Tours simulation ride at Disney-MGM Studios - one of the best rides in Orlando!
  • Shopping at Walmart and feeling you have got some of the best bargains ever!
  • Riding the Jungle Cruise at Disney Magic Kingdom - the atmosphere and the patter from the drivers is great entertainment

Each drive includes a colour map of the area, highlights of the journey, suggested accommodation and places to eat, a driving map with stop off points and a detailed set of tour directions including total distance and estimated time. Many of the drives also include additional detours if you have more time available.

September Events
Labor Day falls on the first Monday in September, the 5th so look out for special Labor Day celebrations. Most students will be returning to school after their summer break so some of the theme park crowds should tail off a little.

In Fort Lauderdale, the 18th Annual Las Olas Art Fair runs from September 3rd to 4th. Over 250 national and international artists will be exhibiting their works in this celebrated outdoor street art festival.

In St. Augustine on the Saturday 3rd September they celebrate their 440th birthday. St. Augustine was founded as a Spanish Colony on September 8th 1565 and is commonly known as the Nation's Oldest City. The Birthday Celebrations start in the morning with the traditional re-enactment of the landing of Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles followed by a Mass at the Mission Nombre de Dios. Later in the day, there will be a music festival in the Plaza de la Constitucion.

The 28th Annual Pensacola Seafood Festival takes place from September 23rd to 25th in the Seville Square area of historic downtown Pensacola. It is the perfect excuse to sample seafood dishes from over 20 different vendors.

The Annual Ocala Shrine Rodeo takes place from September 2nd to 4th at the Livestock Pavilion. This years theme is "Cowboys Ride to Help Children Walk" and over 300 competitors including members of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association will be taking part in bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronco riding, team roping, calf roping and bull riding.
Weather Forecast
September is effectively the end of the rainy season so you can expect less rain towards the end of the month but humidity will remain high.

For the first week, thunderstorms are likely throughout the State with the exception of the Panhandle region. For the rest of the month temperatures are expected to remain seasonally normal but rainfall will be above normal. Expect further thunderstorms towards the end of the month.

Average temperatures are expected to be 81°F (slightly above normal) with above average rainfall.

Make sure you keep your fluid levels up and do not spend too much time out in the sun as the heat indices are still very high at this time of year.

Check out the rest of the Florida weather including monthly temperature and rainfall charts across the State and the latest hurricane news.
Cinderellabration
The new stage show Cinderellabration opened in May 2005 at The Castle Forecourt Stage and runs several times each day.

It has been adapted from the show in Tokyo Disneyland as part of Disneyland's 50th Anniversary "The Happiest Celebration on Earth".

It features the coronation of Cinderella and Prince Charming with guest appearances from princesses from other Disney films including Snow White (from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), Aurora (from Sleeping Beauty), Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) and Jasmine (from Aladdin).
