Choosing a Florida Vacation Home/Villa

When choosing a vacation home/villa bear the following points in mind:

  • location in relation to the attractions you are planning on visiting - you do not want to be spending hours of your precious time sat in your car travelling to and from the parks when you could be enjoying yourselves
  • number of bedrooms - most villas will sleep two people per bedroom plus two more on a sofa bed in the living room. Unless money is tight, get a villa with enough bedrooms to sleep everyone
  • swimming pool - we once rented a villa without a pool and we regretted it; never again!. Make sure your villa has a heated pool (gas or electricity, not solar) particularly if you are planning to visit Florida during the winter months Note that most companies charge extra for heating
  • lanai - it really helps to have a covered area near the pool where you can sit out without being in direct sunlight. On our last trip we never once ate inside the villa, every meal was eaten on the lanai
  • local amenities like shops and restaurants - you do not want to have to drive miles to buy a pint of milk or grab a bite to eat
  • place settings - it may seem daft but it is no good if there are eight of you in the villa and only four chairs and six plates!. Make sure your villa is properly equiped for the number of people staying there
  • outlook - some developments are pretty cramped and you don't want to end up being overlooked by your neighbours. Best outlook is a south or west facing pool with lakeside views but expect to pay more for lake views
