Hiring a private villa with its own pool is not as expensive as it sounds; it can be no more than a good quality hotel. You usually have to pay extra for pool heating; not essential after April but recommended before this.

Always enquire what type of pool heating you are paying for as solar powered heating can be ineffective if the area has a cold snap.

By Florida law, all windows and doors leading to the pool must have childproof locks or alarms fitted; you should make sure these are in order. Pools typically are enclosed by a mesh fly screen to keep bugs and flies out of the pool area.

Most will also come with patio furniture to allow you to sunbathe or eat outside.

A lanai is a covered patio and useful for sheltering from the sun. Another useful extra is a cabana bathroom; this is a bathroom with an entrance directly from the pool area to avoid trailing water through the property.

The pool is usually maintained once or twice a week by a pool company and is included in the price of the rental. Pool filters and pumps operate on a timer and turn on and off automatically.
